The number of women-owned businesses grew 58% over the past 10 years while Black women-owned businesses grew by 164%. Now consider that the failure rate in the first five years is 90 to 95 percent. It’s not enough that women and People of Color are starting more businesses if they can’t sustain them. Black people, including Black-owned businesses were hardest hit by the pandemic and the least prepared to survive. Black-owned businesses plummeted by 40% and also were least able to attain pandemic funding. Because so many front-line workers, most of whom are women and minorities, have lost their jobs, many will venture into small business ownership. They will need help.

Medina started her business at the start of the Great Recession.
